Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Portland OR
440 PM PDT Sun Apr 27 2025
.UPDATED AVIATION DISCUSSION...
.SYNOPSIS...Cooler and drier across the area today in the wake
of a departing system over California. Onshore flow brings
benign conditions and seasonable temperatures through the start
of the week. A passing front will bring a chance for rain across
the area Monday night into Tuesday, but do not expect any
significant precipitation amounts. Weather briefly turns warmer
and drier again Wednesday and Thursday before another system
returns cooler and cloudier conditions to the region late next
week.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Now through Tuesday Night...Strengthening onshore
flow bringing cooler temperatures and cloudier conditions for
the next few days. Westerly winds through the Columbia River
Gorge today will be elevated, with top gusts up to 25-30 mph.
Winds decrease around the middle of tonight (Sunday night), and
will be slightly more mild for a few days. Very weak shortwave
ridging through Monday daytime hours, with lowland temperatures
around the low to mid 60s Sunday and Monday afternoon. Closer to
low to mid 50s at the coast. A very weak embedded shortwave
pushes into the region on Monday afternoon/night, but rainfall
accumulation looks fairly minimal. This trough will be aimed
slightly further north in Washington, and areas north of
portland see around a 40-70% chance of exceeding 0.10 inches of
rainfall between 5pm Mon to 5pm Tue. Slightly higher
accumulations in the Willapa Hills, Northern Coast Range, and
southern WA/northern OR Cascades, with totals closer to 0.3-0.5
inches of rain during this time. Tuesday morning sees rain
tapering off throughout the region, and seasonable temperatures.
/JLiu
.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Saturday...Warmer and dryer
weather returns to the region on Wednesday as a ridge of high
pressure builds overhead and sends temperatures back into the
70s in the interior lowlands. Latest guidance continues to
suggest Thursday will be the hottest day of the week, with the
NBM indicating an 80-90% probability to reach 80 degrees in the
Portland Metro and a 40-60% chance across the rest of the
interior valley locations. Coastal locations will notably remain
cooler as marine layer influences hold temperatures in those
locations down in the 60s. The period of warm weather will be
relatively short lived as WPC ensembles clusters show good
agreement in the ridge shifting east by Friday and opening the
door for the next upper level trough approaching the region.
This will bring another round of cooler and wetter weather to
the area from Friday into next weekend. /CB
&&
.AVIATION...VFR flying conditions likely to continue at inland
terminals through the period. Persistent marine stratus at 3-5 kft
will increase in coverage overnight after 09-13Z Mon, initially at
Portland-area terminals (PDX, TTD) and ultimately south along the
Willamette Valley (HIO, UAO, SLE, EUG) as a marine push progresses
inland. While VFR cigs at 3-4 kft are favored with a likelihood of
60-70%, there remains a 30-40% chance of MVFR cigs at 2-3 kft
overnight and into Monday morning. Low stratus will persist into
Monday afternoon, with cigs lifting back to 4-5 kft after 18-20Z
Mon. Northwest winds of 5-10 kt will weaken to less than 5 kt out
of the west after 06-09Z Mon, then turn out of the north to
northwest after 16-18Z Mon.
Current mixed VFR/MVFR conditions along the coast will trend down
to MVFR as cigs lower to 1.5-2.5 kft after 03-06Z Mon. MVFR
conditions are then favored to continue through at least 18-20Z
Mon, when lifting cigs may see conditions return to VFR, more
likely to the south at ONP. An approaching trough late in the
period will bring 20-30% chances of light rain showers to AST
after 18Z Mon. Northwest winds at 5-10 kt will weaken to less
than 5 kt out of the west overnight, then increase back to 5-10 kt
after 18Z Mon.
PDX AND APPROACHES...VFR flying conditions expected through the
period with cigs of 3-5 kft and unrestricted vis. There remains a
30-40% chance for MVFR cigs at 2-3 kft from 09-18Z Mon, however
continued VFR cigs are favored. There is a 10-15% chance of light
rain showers after 21Z Mon, with no impacts currently expected.
Northwest winds around 5 kt will weaken and turn out of the west
overnight, before turning back out of the northwest at around 5 kt
again after 18Z Mon. -Picard
&&
.MARINE...High pressure over the northeast Pacific continues to
shift inland, supporting benign conditions into next week.
Expect seas around 5 to 7 feet and mostly northwesterly winds at
or below 10 kt and gust 15 kt or less.
A short Small Craft Advisory for the Columbia River Bar has been
issued for steep ebb chop and will come to end by 8 AM Monday.
Ebb current of 7.35 kt and seas 7 to 8 feet expected. -Batz

.PQR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
